Comments

A thiamine-diphosphate protein. Wide specificity for both reactants, e.g. converts hydroxypyruvate and R-CHO into CO2 and R-CHOH-CO-CH2OH. Transketolase from Alkaligenes faecalis shows high activity with D-erythrose as acceptor.

Strong TKTL1 protein expression has been correlated with a certain type of glucose metabolism (aerobic glycolysis;
Warburg effect) and to cells which are affected by chronic complications of diabetic patients [P51854 ];

In colon and urothelial carcinomas, expression at the protein level is correlated with invasiveness of tumors and poor patient survival [P51854 ];

Has been implicated in the latent genetic disease Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) [MIM:277730]. WKS causes specific brain damage [P29401 ];
